One of the best (and sometimes feared by unscrupulous brokers...) surveyors in the NW has a good web site, and the section on things to look for during an inspection is worth printing out, IMHO. Here are a couple of clickable links for her site.

I dealt with a similar surveyor north of the border - she doesnt have the lovely informative site, that I know of, but she did a great job on an older Ben First I walked away from not long ago...
