Even just aimless daysailing, I really do enjoy looking out and planning which way to go, where to tack, watching traffic, and if another boat is in the vicinity, go faster.

One big difference. In chess, the Queen doesn't pout when the King tells her it's been two hours without wind, and it's time to turn the engine on.
One summer evening, we left Newport Beach, with another couple on board, at 7:30pm heading for Dana Point (about 12 miles south). There was GREAT wind all night, but it was right on the nose. We tacked back and forth the entire way home. My male friend and I having the best of times. At about 10:30pm my wife said "we would get there faster if we turned on the engine". We sailed into Dana Point at 2:30am. What a GREAT sail. To this day she reminds of this and I tell her I thought "You were justg stating a fact, not making a request". Perhaps that is why she sails with me infrequently. The Queen not only pouts, she remembers.

Sailing compared to motoring is like comparing a nice filet mignon to a McDonalds hamburger. The latter will fill your stomach faster but the former tastes much better but takes longer to eat.
