greetings,

Has anyone taken on the task of replacing the factory teak and holly cabin floor? The floor in my '81 E 28+ has gotten water damaged and is spongy in a few spots. seems like a daunting task, and wondered if it is a DIY project or do I need to bite the bullet and pay a shipwright to the work?

Cabin Sole

If you are handy with common hand tools you can do it. My son and i repalced our E-38 sole two years ago I suspect like the 38 you will not be able to creat sections as large as the original ( the sole was installed before the cabin top went on). the best thing you can do is to use penitrating epoxy on all surfaces brush it on until no more will soak into the wood, this was not doen by ericson originaly. I'll forwarn you do not be shocked what you find under the floor boards. it will be grungy and smelly I celaned ours and painted with bilge coat we no longer have that funky odor in the boat after it has been close up for a while. Repalce water lines and wiring while you are in there. Do a search on this site you will finde severl good articles and pictures. My pictures were lost when my lap top was stolen. Take yourtime make good templates out of craft paper and you will be very happy with the results.

Several members here have posted up information and pictures on their sole replacement successes on other Ericsons from the 80's. You might want to do some site searches. While it certainly is a DIY potential project, it appears to involve a lot of finish carpentry. If you are not good at this when you start, you will be good at it when you're done! :)
