Mike, congratulations on your purchase. How is it being transported down to Marina Del Rey? That would be a wild sail this time of year, especially with all the storms we have had.

I hired a delivery skipper to take her down with me and a friend this weekend. We had beautiful weather - for hiking, camping, whale-watching, anything but sailing. No wind! We motor-sailed most of the way. Pt. Conception gave us about 10 knots of warm wind from off the land, not offshore.

But she is in her new berth at last, we arrived last night at around 9pm in MDR. Woohoo!

Congrats

Mike:

Very interesting reading your take on the winds from San Fran to Marina Del Rey. I know you were bummed but don't worry you will have plenty of good sailing days.

Pt. Conception can be a real ride but sounds like no worries.

Enjoy your new E32.

I've seen many

I new owner of an 1971 E32, Skye. Nice boat but needs a lot of work. I sail out of Ventura Harbor - Ventura West Marina. Just on C dock I have seen 3 Ericson 35 + my 32. I've also seen a very nice 32 sailing around. Hope to spend more time at the Channel Islands this summer!! Ventura Ericsons - maybe we could do a cruise/race to Santa Cruz sometime! Just contact me - warrencasey@wickedtinkers.com

Hey Warren!

Welcome to Ventura West Marina. I keep my E-29 on D-dock 104. As for Santa Cruz, I will be going out there alot this summer as soon as I get my furler installed and get my new canvas. I should have this done by spring. There also is an E-27 that is new to D-dock and a 35-2 there also.

Look Foward to meeting you

Here is a complete list of Moorings and Anchorages at Catalina

Here is a complete list of Moorings and Anchorages at Catalina for those of you who are not familiar with the Island. Personally I recommend Howlings Landing or Emerald Cove for a gathering because they both have a fair amount of moorings and you don't have to deal with the tourist crowd as much. The facilities at these locations are private and there are no heads or showers but the beaches are for the public. I also suggest we try to gather early or late in the season so everyone can get a mooring because of the first come, first serve policy's on mooring. My third choice would be Cat Harbor on the back side. It's a bit farther though.

It might be a good idea to set up a poll for folks to vote on a suggested Gathering Date.

Skipper Jeff

Here's the List:

Descanso Bay just West of Avalon around Casino Point has 47 moorings in 65 to 85 feet of water and can anchor off the point outside the buoys.

Hamilton Cove has 36 moorings and a view of the condos, can be pretty at night.

Toyon Bay has 9 moorings but room to anchor 6 boats.** Shore facilities are leased to the Catalina Island Marine Institute.

Willow Cove No moorings. Fair weather anchorage for 4 boats with a sandy bottom.

Moonstone Beach has 39 moorings, shore facilities leased to Newport Harbor Yacht Club and no one else but there is room to anchor 12 boats here.

White's Landing has 17 moorings and is good place to be in westerlies. Balboa Yacht Club and the Angeles Girl Scout Council share the shore. Great place to anchor, will handle up to 20 boats in 40 to 48 feet of water.

Hen Rock Cove has 25 moorings and anchorage for 10 and shore facilities are leased to the Balboa Yacht Club.** The bottom here is rock and sand.

Buttonshell Beach with only 7 moorings does offer good anchorage for up to 10 boats.* Shore facilities leased to Glendale YMCA

Goat Harbor has no moorings but is a good fair weather anchorage for 5 to 10 boats with a sandy bottom at 6 to 8 fathoms and hosts two beaches.

Cabrillo Beach also called Little Gibraltar after the large rock offshore has no moorings but offers good anchorage for 6 to 9 boats in fair weather.* The west beach side is leased to the Long Beach Boy Scouts.

Rippers Cove has no moorings but a good sand bottom for anchoring up to 10 boats in fair weather.

Empire Landing has 2 very private moorings but up to 20 boats can anchor here in fair weather .* Shore facilities leased to the Connolly Pacific Company

Big Fisherman's Cove located on the Eastern side of Isthmus Cove is reportedly the only true shelter during Santa Anas on the north shore of Catalina Island and is leased, water and all, from headland to headland to the U.S.C. Marine Science Center, who discourages anchoring in all but the most foul weather conditions.

Little Fisherman's Cove shore facilities are leased to the King Harbor Yacht Club and the Channel Cruising Club.* Camp and barbecue facilities available through the Catalina Cove and Camp Agency.

Isthmus Cove has about 245 moorings and a stringline for 42 boats 25 feet or less as well as room for about 100 boats to anchor in up to 60' of water, give or take a few depending upon the flotilla boat size.* Moorings are maintained and leased by the Catalina Cove and Camp Agency who handles all moorings outside of Avalon Harbor.* They operate a patrol boat that will meet you at the entrance to whichever cove you choose or can be reached on Channel 9.** Be patient, they'll get to you next.** Moorings are stern and bow ties.* Like Avalon, moorings are on a first come, first served basis and are assigned upon arrival

Fourth of July Cove is leased by the Fourth of July Yacht Club who own the 42 moorings. There is no anchoring here.

Cherry Cove is leased to the San Gabriel Valley Council Boy Scouts and has 103 moorings and no anchorages.

Little Geiger Cove only has 1 mooring and anchorage is sketchy here when the wind blows, best to use stern and bow anchors. Shore facilities are leased to the Offshore Cruising Club.

Big Geiger Cove has no moorings but is a good fair weather anchorage.** Shore facilities are leased by the Blue Water Cruising Club.

Howland's Landing is a private beach leased to the LA Yacht Club and the Catalina Island Camps with about 40 moorings but no anchorage.

Emerald Bay offers a small beach on to the east but shore facilities are privately held by Corsair Yacht Club and the Great Western Council Boy Scouts. There are 100 moorings with room for about 10 anchorages.* Stay away from Indian Rock and the surrounding rock outcroppings.

Parson's Landing is only a stopover site in fair weather with room for about 10 to anchor but is best visited by dinghy or overland from Emerald Bay.

Catalina (Cat) Harbor is an all-weather harbor, protected in most weather and has 77 moorings with room for 200+ boats at anchor in a tight situation.* There is a landing pier for dinghies and the shore is open except for those areas leased to the Del Rey Yacht Club and the California Yacht Club.

Little Harbor on the south side of the island has no moorings but anchorage for about 25 boats. Watch out for the reef when entering and remember that the bottom is gravel and big rocks so anchor well.* Water is available.

Another thought.

Another thought. If any one has a affiliation with any of the following organizations we might be able to arrange to utilize their beach facilities like Heads, Showers, Picnic Tables and BBQs.

Corsair Yacht Club, LA Yacht Club, Del Rey Yacht Club and the California Yacht Club, Catalina Island Camps, Great Western Council Boy Scouts. :egrin:

Jeff:

Nice job, way to take action. I am not familiar with Catalina so this helped me out a lot. I would like to go early season. Remember I am coming from Channel Islands so I have a little trip, so I would like to go to the closer location. I am sure a few Ericson owners from my area will be interested.

I elect you honorary captain for getting everything together.

Count me in.....

"Gathering of So. Cal Vikings at Catalina Island"

Thank You Don,

I reluctantly accept your nomination of me as Captain of a "Gathering of So. Cal Vikings at Catalina". I only accept the nomination because talk is cheap. I see we can all talk the talk, now lets see if we can walk the walk.

First off, who is the our Moderator. I would like some assistance in setting up a Poll, like the recent Dinghy Poll that had such great responses. This would be a simple poll with only a few questions.

1) A choice of Dates for the Gathering.

2) A choice of Catalina Locations for the Gathering.

3) A choice of Activities, if any.

I vote for isthmus cove. Plenty of moorings, picnic tables, and a staff
that is calm in the face of boating hijinks.

Easter weekend is coming up?

I agree with you Martin. The only reason I suggested the other coves is that is where I have seen gatherings of specific makes of yachts. Also there would be more of a opportunity to moor as a group. The Isthmus has all the amenities we would need, like I mentioned in a earlier post. How about thinking about a time? Easter weekend is coming up and that is still early in the season. Things get a little busier after Memorial Day. Any other thoughts on a date? :egrin:

Hey Jeff:

Looks like you started something and are doing all the work. I am up for any date I will get off of work for this event. I have never been to Catalina so it would be new for me. I would vote for Istmus Cove because I have heard a lot of good things about this anchorage. I guess we have to set up a poll for dates. Maybe we can just set a couple of dates and see what response we get. I need a long weekend so that is big for me. It is a 12 hour sail/motor for me from Channel Islands.

Do any Channel Islands boaters have any interest in going to Catalina before Memorial Day weekend? I am just trying to get some interest strirred up..
