While typhoons (and "superstorms") are very rare along the NW coast, we do get really strong winds and huge seas during winter storms.
Today's forecast is one reason that we do not do winter deliveries up/down the WA coast. (And probably why our insurance companies might not insure a passage this time of year, in any case.)


OTOH, storm-watching from the shore is wonderful. A group of us sailors did a land cruise to the resort at http://www.quileuteoceanside.com/ a week and a half ago. Off-season rates are very low, too.
Seas to 12' and steady winds @ 25 and many gusts to 30. Wild and wonderful, sleeping with window open a hundred yards from the roar of the surf. Only two surfers there that weekend and they stayed close-in. Harbor entry was mostly closed. The outer surf line was waaaay out there. Masses of foam on the beach and covering the back-wash.

Here's a shot of a nice storm moving over the Columbia Bar on 11/9. There was a ~45 foot powerboat trying to cross the bar when this was happening and he was taking a huge beating! About half an hour after this shot was taken a tornado briefly touched down near Warrenton, and it hailed about two inches in Seaside in 20 minutes! I was very glad to be on shore...

Here's a couple from our LaPush visit on the 5th. Soft focus, due to the camera being a cheapie.

The island in the frame is James Island. The entry channel into the harbor is about 50 yards wide... between the backside of that island and the rock jetty. In the one picture you can almost see out the red piling marker on the end of the jetty. It's left of center and up a bit in the frame.

ps: It's dangerous duty for the young USCG men and women stationed there. I just noticed this obit/narrative posted on-line.

There is a granite memorial at the top of the ramp at that little harbor, with the names of the deceased, as well as other fishermen who have died.

pps: It was one of the new 47 footers that towed us in when a crab pot line fouled our prop in '09, and our whole crew "discovered" what a treasure this small tribal community really is.

Love the "Deep Purple", "Black Night", Soundtrack! Too bad it wasn't "Stormbringer".

I drove over and doubled up the dock lines saturday morning, checked the bilge pump and such. Everyone seemed to be putting out blue plastic tarps over their boats. I would have thought that the extra windage was counter-indicated. Well at least there are no longer any worries about running aground inside the marina.
