Trailer for Ericson 25

Kringe,

It's not easy finding a used sailboat trailer, but I know some on this forum have found some success. If you get lucky, you'll find a decent one. I didn't have any luck finding any trailer at all, at least one that was both decent and galvanized. A painted metal trailer will only last about two seasons in a salt water environment. I've tried that before with a powerboat trailer. Bought a galvanized powerboat trailer and greased it (as an added measure of protection). Have not had a bit of rust on it for nine years.

Meeting with no success in my search for a decent used galvanized sailboat trailer, I broke down and bought a new trailer. Wasn't cheap, but I know that it's safe to tow the E25 - which is much heavier than most 25 ft boats (or 27 foot boats for that matter) from other manufacturers.

Here's a link to a thread I started "e25 trailering weight" when I began my search for a trailer:

Best of luck,

Escort Trailer I use for my 1974 Ericson 25

How would one go about finding a trailer for an Ericson 25?
I bought my Ericson with a trailer. It works great. I can use any ramp and it tracks fantastic. It is a roller type with 12 inch rollers on the keel. Hope this helps. Kringe, you will be sorry if you sell your boat. I was looking to buy another one and fix it up like I did this one. Have fun. paul

Welcome to the forum Paul. That's a cool paint job you did on your boat. Nice trailer too. Good to know that there's another E25 owner just up the road, or, I should say, up the waterway from Charleston. Looks like you joined the forum about a 1.5 years ago. Have you been working on her that long?

Best,
Roscoe

Paul,

The boat looks great. What color are you going to paint the shear stripe? ;-)

Hello Roscoe, Thanks for the kind words. Yes I have been working on it off and on for the last 1 1/2 years. I bought it from a guy in Maryland who didn't keep it up. I pumped about 300 gallons of water out of the cabin when I picked it up. I also had to replace the tires on the trailer and fix the lights so I could drive it home. I painted the boat back to it's original color on the hull and white instead of cream color on the topside. As I am a GT grad, she is now named, "Yellow Jacket". It has a Yanmar diesel that works great, but I had to replace the shaft, flex coupling, fixed coupling, and seal. Not cheap. All that is left to do is finish up the cabin. No more painting. But epoxy work and electrical. Paul

Paul,

That's amazing that you had to pump all that water out of her. 300 gallons? Must have had some rot issues on the bulkheads. You say that black was the original hull color? That's interesting. I thought that they were all painted white with red stripes as in the attached picture from the Ericson 25, cb, brochure. Cool that you have a Yanmar inside of her. Sort of wish I had one.

Roscoe

On the subject of trailering . . . how would you like to be the guy towing the Ericson in the picture? Loaded down or what?

Roscoe, Sorry the hull was Yellow from the factory. I put the black bottom paint over the yellow. I had to sand down to the base color and it came up bright yellow. I got it before I had too much repair. It was rainwater that came in down the hatch in the cockpit. All I had to do was turn on the bilge pump. The guy had turned it off. Duh.
I wouldn't want to be the guy in the photo, all I can say is I hope he had a sway bar. I had no trouble pulling my trailer with my Nissan Armada. It will haul 10K pounds.
By the way Roscoe what are the slip costs down in Charleston? I am thinking of putting a boat down there. Probably 30 footer. Thanks Paul

Slips in Charleston aren't cheap. The most affordable one for Charleston County residents are the Charleston County owned docks at the old Naval Base. At the subsidized rate for residents it would cost me almost $300 a month for 25 footer, assuming I was picked from the waiting list. This was the main reason why I opted for buying a trailer. The new trailer will pay for itself in a relatively short amount of time, and will then save me money - money that I can put into the boat itself.

Roscoe, one additional thing. Has anybody got the original Mast Crutch that Ericson included with their E-25. I have been trying to come up with one to assist in raising my mast but I don't have a photo of the original so that I can fabricate a new one. Any photos would be greatly appreciated.

Paul,

There have been some discussions about this issue on the forum. Attached is the thread titled, "E25 Successful Mast Raising." There are good pictures of the hinge set-up you describe. If you don't want to go this route, you could opt for building what I call a Mast-Step A-Frame. Rob Hessenius includes a link in the thread below to a Youtube video that shows a couple of guys unstepping a mast on a Catalina 27 with one of these A-Frames. Rob built his own and uses it on his E25. He also coached me on how to construct one. I have pictures of the one I built back in October. I also have a materials list that I wrote up. I haven't gotten a chance to use mine yet. Rob, though, says his works well for him.

Don't know if you noticed the message I sent you the other day, but you're welcome to stop by and check out my E25 whenever you're down in Charleston. Would help to compare notes, especially on the electrical upgrades that we both appear to be working on.

Best regards,
Roscoe

Found a trailer just like mine for sale

How would one go about finding a trailer for an Ericson 25?
I found a trailer just like the one I have for my Ericson 25. It is on Ebay now for 800 but will probably cost more then 1200. Great trailer to haul the boat and easy to offload.

1989 ESCORT 24' BOAT TRAILER TANDEM AXLE WITH BRAKES is the title on the site. Good luck. Paul
