The gear ratio is how your prop pitch is determined, I.E. gear ratio with prop pitch is similar to gear ratio + rear end differential ratio + tire size determines engine speed at a given vehicle speed in cars. So if you switched from a 2.00:1 drive to a 1.00:1 the only thing that you would have to do is switch the prop pitch to the appropriate one. This is a long winded way of saying that if 1 to 1 drives are all you can find out there now, all is not lost. You can go with the 1 to 1 and an appropriate prop and be fine.
My 41 had the Westerbeke and the V drive hauled out of it and a newer Yanmar with direct drive put in, before I bought it. Honestly, that's the deciding factor in why I bought this one and not an equally nice one that was available, with the original setup in it.
