Yes, the use of silicone in connection with these ports is disappointing. I don't know what the Ericson factory fixed port installation looked like, but the bead of silicone on the glass and the use of it around the frame split was how mine were put together. I recorded my first frame re-work starting with this Blog post in 2018.


I am intrigued with the substitution with the black butyl, which I have used in other areas myself. I found a roll of the butyl at the Speedy Glass place also, another shelf-stock item that is seldom used these days.

I ended up going with the black butyl in the channel and then sealed on both sides with black 3M 4200. I had to do two tries with the butyl because the glass was too wide for the full 5/16th butyl rope. I had to stretch it a little to make it narrower. I was able to re-use the same material I took out. It is supposed to warm up starting this weekend, so it's going back in so I can move on to the next one.
