Despite the new appearance on the market of the laser "flare" replacements, we are still relying on the traditional Olin 12 gauge launcher.
So every three years we buy another 3-pack of flares. There are probably around 20 flare shells on board. Last time I tried one of the oldest ones it worked perfectly.
We have to have on hand current-date flare shells for our annual Vessel Safety Check, and then get our little sticker. Pretty basic sort of check list, but still helpful for getting into the mind set for spring boating.
It would be nice to have a Solas grade flare, but they are really expensive, and some real time passes before we are off shore again.
The flare "kit" is at least very easy to find in a hurry, in the bin beside the nav desk seat.
