What was it like? The idyllic weeks of the Admiral's Cup, Cherbourg rising out of the mist, the beer tent aflame, the violent international competition on the howling Solent, the gradual bonding day by day of a big-boat crew headed, although they didn't know it yet, into a depression so violent the millibars on the weather maps would nearly touch? I was writing a biography of Ted Turner that year and signed on as main sheet trimmer (a job I was to be periodically fired from, then promoted back to, then fired from again, in accord with Turner's motivation methods). Although "Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way" is long out of print, the chapter on the race still gives a full contemporaneous account of a living seminar in yacht design, offshore preparedness and risk management.
We of the crew of 18 thought ourselves a dashing bunch in those days.
At a 2019 reunion we looked...different. But the music still plays.
