So continuing on last entry, here is a bit of a collection of imagery from the still-not-completed transom. I won't storyboard this one so much, but there are some interesting facets to cover -- one of the annoying construction details of the Ericson 29 is back upper edge of the transom. There is a very thick and strong "arch" structure that makes up the top of the transom, that is connected to the hull(back of the transom) by what looks like 2 layers of 6 oz boat cloth. I think this design element was done in order to keep the very sharp trailing edge design motif they had going on... but this area is cracked on every '29 i've seen. Mine had several repair attempts there, mismatched gel coat, all sorts of uglery.
Part of this booty makeover for my boat was to correct this with 3 layers of 17 oz biaxial over the entire trailing edge (6 around the new and critical structural cockpit floor-to-transom transition).
Oh and I needed to really get rid of the name.
But i think I went a little overboard...
Either way we're prepped for glass..
So first let's do a tie coat of epoxy..
Then the first layer of glass..
At this point things had to proceed "quickly" and I stopped taking pictures until I was done. Which was about midnight, if i remember right..
First layer of fairing is on, filling the glass weave. Here is a picture of the thickness of the new glass over that top-to-back transition...
Pretty sure that won't crack anymore
First fairing sanded and ready for 2..
Second fairing... getting better but not there yet.
Sanding came after this, and I need to finish fairing that out. However i got sucked back into the work vortex... BUT things are coming along. I got some interior work done here and there, and that's starting to come together. I'll be showing that in future posts but...people are starting to wake up here at the marina. Bloody mary time....
