MiFi

In June we moved our boat from a marina to a private doc. In so doing we moved away from WiFi access. In looking for an alternative we settled on Verizon MiFi. Available from other services under different names, this a small wireless 3G device combined with a WiFi transciever. About the size of a deck of cards (but thinner) the MiFi connects to the internet via wireless 3G and acts as a WiFi router capable of handling up to five devices with a range of about 30'. We have had two PCs or a PC and iPod Touch going at the same time with no adverse affect on speeds.

While the monthly rate is higher than most marina's WiFi we are no longer restricted to the marina. It works anywhere 3G is available, even on the highway. Since it is rechargeable like the PC you need not be connected to AC.

If you are considering marina WiFi give these devices a look. Most of our local anchorages are in cell range and this has worked great for us.

I am not affiliated with Verizon in any way, but find this a useful tool.

It is also possible to use your cell phone(pda) as a wireless modem. Most companies charge extra on top of the unlimited data plan for this. I use AT&T. I rarely use it on the boat though as I like to be disconnected while cruising. It does come in handy for work though.

Verizon NAtional Access I think is what we used on our cruise to New England. Was an addiotional $15/month allowed us to tether the blackberry to the laptop. My company gets these little cards from Verizon that do the same thing but without the phone. They are $60 month. We found the speeds better with the blackberry tethered than the marina's free Wifi. We watched a movie one night off it and it was nearly perfect. Worked offshore to about 40 miles too.

The MiFi is very nice, especially since it is so small. But Cradlepoint 3G WiFi gateways have several advantages:

1. Use it with any carrier's 3G USB dongle, even in Mexico (there is excellent 3G coverage in Mexico, too).
2. Up to 16 devices connected to the WiFi at once, not just 5.
3. WiFi service is still available when charging.
4. Spare batteries available for extended periods away from charging source
5. Excellent web interface for configuring the device, setting security, etc.
6. Ready for upgrade to 4G devices right now, just plug in a 4G USB dongle.

The MiFi cannot service WiFi while connected to USB port, and USB port is the only way to charge it => cannot use WiFi while it is charging.

I recommend the PHS300 for most people. The CTR350 is the same device, but also has a wired ethernet port, and lacks the internal battery. A 12V power cable is available.

There are also some high-end Cradlepoint routers with extended WiFi range for enterprise-class solutions. They also just introduced some new home/small office routers that can connect to cable/DSL/ethernet, and use the 3G connection as an automatic backup connection.

If you already have a MiFi, the Cradlepoint routers can use it just as if it were a USB dongle. So the best option is a MiFi with a Cradlepoint: super portable for taking ashore, but robust WiFi when you need it.

The WiFi is too unreliable in our marina, so I just add the tethering plan on my VZW voice/data plan using my BB for the summer. You can add/remove the service w/o any service contracts! Plenty fast enough for emails and web surfing!
