Curious if anyone has installed one of these on their E38?

Am thinking about doing so and am wondering if there are any lessons learned someone might have to share?

I was wondering if anyone knows how the backstay chainplate is installed on an E-35 II. It looks to me that it is glassed in place without through bolts. Has anyone had trouble with this installation and has anyone through bolted the chainplate. I ask this because I see some stress fractures and...
I'm thinking of adding a backstay adjuster to my '86 E28 and a couple of questions come to mind. 1) Is the Keynon mast flexable enough to really benifit.
2) When reefing do you release the backstay to the orginal tension. As the main is made shorter it would seem to benfit less from the flex of...
My 1984 E38's backstay chainplate cracked inexplicably last weekend. I'm perplexed because I wouldn't expect there it ever to be under that significant a load. I cruise in the Santa Barbara channel.
My rigger is going to have a new one fabricated, but in order to do so I'll need the...
I'm now stripping the boat of all deck hardware for rebedding and repaint. I've been struggling all morning to remove the backstay chainplates (as well as the rear lifeline and navigation light) through the lazarettes. I really don't want to go through this struggle when I reattach them, so I'm...
I have the orig 1989 Navtec hydraulic backstay, works fine.
This is the first time I've had one on a boat, didn't even know there was a # pressure gauge on it . My slip partner said you should use between 2,000 & 2,500# pressure.
Also...I recently had my standing rigging...
Finished one project and on to another! I'm going to get a Furuno 2KW radar and am debating mounting options. I am debating either the Garhauer pole or Questus backstay mount. This would be for coastal and bay cruising, and if I go the pole route, I may put a solar panel on it.
I know both...
I have a 1989 28' with a backstay adjuster using 4 wire rope sheaves, 1-3/8" dia. There is a sailboat emblem on the connecting plate. Anyone know who makes it and where I might find a replacement sheave? Harken is a tad too big.
OK- I have done the research and decided I want to go with a backstay mounted and gimbaled installation for my radar. I have looked at several options and looks like options are Questus, ScanStrut and Waltz. Waltz looks like it just came out of receivership or a sale or something and aside...
Hello to all,
I would appreciate comments, advice, opinions on the pros and cons of manual vs. hydraulic backstay adjusters. This is our first year with our 35 III and we are just beginning to realize what a wonder sailing boat it is. We race for fun and because it forces one to do things...
Can anyone recommend an outfit in the NE to rebuild my Navtec hydraulic backstay adjuster? I do not care as much about price than I do about quality and turnaround time.
Thanks
I added a backstay adjuster to my Ericson 27 and noticed while at dock that when tensioned the forward lower shrouds loose tension. I measured the difference with a loos gauge and found it to be about 80 lbs. Is this normal? I thought that tension would have increased in the forwards and...
Anyone on the list capable of giving me guidance on what the appropriate Navtec unit should be? Is a 10 large enough, or should I go with a 12?
thanks in advance

Hello All,
I noticed oil at the top of the Navtec hydraulic backstay adjuster today. Its seeping out the seal on the piston/rod where it slides in and out. I assume this is a problem that will only get worse and needs to be addressed. Will this fail suddenly or can it wait a bit? It doesn't...
Looks like mechanical would be cheaper but are they not so great? I am referring to the ones that use a ratchet or winch handle. Seems like they are 200-400 cheaper than the sailtec or navtec which would run me about 1000 for the E 38-200. Thoughts?
I am hoping to get one of these for the boat soon. (E 38-200) Any thoughts on brands? Navtec seems to be the way to go but they are not cheap. Looks like about $1500. Not exactly something I would want to go cheap on but I am always after a bargain... I would have to modify the stern pulpit btu...
Today I stepped the mast after replacing all the standing rigging, compounding and waxing, rewiring etc. The backstay where it attaches to the stern is run outside of the pulpit but rubs some on the pulpit. This was the case with the old rigging too. I cant tell if the shroud should actually run...
Has anyone had any experience with mechanical backstay adjusters on later model Ericsons? We have an '87 E34 with a new main (1 season) and a new head sail coming in a few weeks to be fitted to the existing Harken II roller furling. I'd like to be able to bend the ast a bit to take up slack...
The owners manual I have includes instructions for "raising the mast W/single back stay". Our back stay is split and adjustable.
Were some of the 23s equipped with just a single, off-center backstay ?
Thanks,
-Sven
My 1980 E38 has an insulated backstay. I want to keep it for a couple reasons - I may get a ham license someday, or I may install an HF radio for listening to shortwave broadcasts. Are insulators strong enough to use with backstay tensioners? I don't know the brand of insulator off hand.
Why...
Does my '73 E27 need an adjustable backstay? I have a solid-rod roller furling unit that I keep fairly taught anyway... Am I goin' to lose all of them races cause I ain't got no backstay bender?
Seriously, I don't care much about racing but I would like to know how much closer to...
I am looking to add some type of backstay adjuster to my 1985 Ericson 32 this year. I thought I might ask if anyone has one they want to get rid of before I buy a new one? I'll consider any kind but would prefer hydraulic.
I'm getting ready to go sailing for a week in the San Juans - can anyone give me a nice, simple overview of how to attach the new Echo Master reflector to my backstay?
