Yesterday while racing we jibed without sheeting in the main first- mistake. Gusts were in the low 20s and the pad eye riveted inside the boom to hold the main sheet block broke. I used a couple sail ties and made a bridle on the boom so we could keep sailing.
I’m thinking of a dyneema boom...
A question for @Christian Williams, in the forum for the sake of general consumption:
I have recently joined the prestigious and exclusive club of people who have broken their Kenyon boom aluminum gooseneck castings. I have been able to order a replacement from Rig-Rite and plan to add a set...
Hello all looking for some insight and advice here. My e28+ has what appears to be an unusually high boom: 7' from cockpit floor and 5' from deck, shy a couple of inches.
I can stand straight on the cockpit seats and still have 6" of headroom! As per the reference photo when I'm standing on the...
1972 E35-2
I recently needed to stress check a lower shroud.
I loosened the lower shrouds, and found the support beam in the cabin between mast and hull had moved slightly making it so the head door wouldn’t close. Compression plate recently replaced there’s no sag whatsoever.
I screwed up and...
Good morning all,
Is there anyone with an E27 who would be so kind as to shoot a couple of pictures of your boom, traveller and mainsheet rigging? We haven't changed anything since we bought the boat. To clarify, we brought our boat home the middle of May, then July 1st it went into the shop...
tl;dr - Boom-to-gooseneck fitment was found to be loose. This thread is dedicated to the re-fitment of these pieces, as well as the cleanup and replacement of some frozen sheaves on the fitting at the end of the boom.

A few days ago, I was replacing the reefing lines on my 1985 Ericson 32-3...
I was out chipping the ice out of the cockpit drains today ad took the time to look down the length of the boom (with no sail on it) and I noticed that it has a bend right where the spring loaded vang connects, it seems to bend to port about 1" (the very end of the boom is deflected about 1"...
Is anyone else having trouble contacting Rig-Rite? I had ordered an outhaul assembly for my Kenyon boom and never got it. I have tried calling repeatedly and get no human beings - just a message system which results in nothing... If Rig-Rite is done does anyone have advice on spar parts for an...
Hi All,
I am parting out my Ericson 27. The following is a partial list of items. I will have pictures of everything soon:
- Main Sail (New from Precision in 2016)
- Jib (older #1)
- Mast & Boom
- Newly Rebuilt Forward Hatch
- Refinished Companionway Hatch
- Tiller Handle
- Newly Built Teak...
Hi,
We have been recovering a 1978 E27 here in Valparaíso, Chile.
When my friends removed the mast, they forgot to take pictures of the very special way the boom and the mainsheet rigging were installed:esad:.
It seems a quite tricky system.
Could anybody owning a similar one, please, send us...
After a great sail on Saturday, one of the crew noticed an innocuous looking semi-circular piece of aluminum lying on deck near the foot of the mast. It took a while for us to figure out where it came from:
That's probably hard to see - it's the front end of the boom where it attaches to the...
Hi everyone,Successfully moved Rozinante to her new home. Averaged 5.5 kts over a 5 hour sail! Sails are a little aged but pretty fast :)When I hanked on the main, the outhaul was jammed and had to engineer a few shackles to attach the clew. The shackles will hold but wanna break into the...
The 35-2 boom and gooseneck seem to be located way too high on the mast. I am aware of the original rating "logic". I am ordering a new main and dropping the gooseneck by 18 inches or so seems like a very good idea. Has anybody done this, and how much did you lower your boom?
I plan to run the reefing lines internal of the boom on my E29 T. I plan to add two sheaves on the outside of the boom end in line with the outhaul and make guards for the sheaves to keep the lines on the sheaves. At the mast end I plan to have one exit hole with a cam cleat on an angled base...
Can anyone tell me what the specs are for the original boom? My 35-2 was modified to a short boom that just comes to the forward edge of the cockpit. I'd like to restore it to the original. So, if anyone knows the manufacturer and dimensions, I would appreciate the information.
Thanks.
Has anyone seen corrosion like this before? This taken from my boom. It was suggested to sand this off, but I’m thinking to will scratch the metal.
Thoughts?
Hi I just purchased a 77 E 27 and I dont know how to rig it I found sails and the mast is already stepped and the boom is attached but I don't know how to rig tthe boom it is hooked to the rear stays in the storage position.
I brought my boom home for sanding and new paint. In preping for the job I removed a bunch of pop rivets which were connected to nothing at all. But two of them held an eyestrap in place about 4-5 feet from the aft end. The eyestrap was the anchor point for a cable pennant about two feet long...
The boom on my E23 seems to separate and release the foot of the sail at the aft end of the boom. Does anyone know how this can be corrected without buying another boom. Any help would be helpful.
Hi,
I salvaged a E35 Mk ll that had about 15 years of Northwest use before it got off a mooring and sunk in 1988. It had been sitting away from salt air since so the hardware is pretty decent.
The mast and boom are painted white. Spreaders are rotten, rigging wire and turnbuckles look good...
Hi All,
I am looking to install a Boom Vang on my 1976 E27. I perceive the need to do such when I will be in a following sea with the wind on my aft quarter. I intend to secure the vang to a stanchion base on the appropriate side. My stanchion bases are reinforced with backing plates. The...
I am replacing all the standing and running rigging on Moonshine. It previously had a roller furling system on the main. I have removed that and I am now returning it to its orignal configuration, if I can figure out what that was.
It seems that there are three systems within the boom. A...
have a mast, a boom, and spin. pole from an ericson 35 for sale.It is a double spreader rig with all of the rigging, winches, fittings, etc. no roller furl but have a lot of extra stainless rigging to go with. Also a complete pedestal steering system that I will remove from the boat for you.My boats...
Is a furled mainsail (boom style) any good? I mean, does it sail well and it it worth the extra trouble and expense to get one? Will the sail hold a good shape when it is furled on the boom? What about battens?
I have a 1988 32-200 that is due for a new main sail. I believe that I am running...
Hi All, we're getting ready for our first official summer sailing season on our E-27 "Variation". We are going to be day sailing mostly, no racing or anything like that and we need a boom vang. I've been looking at the different makes and models and my eyes are now glossed over so I come to...
Gentlemen
I attached a photo and want to know if anyone has disassembled a similar type boom.
Once the acorn nuts are removed are the studs threaded rod that I need to loosen and push/pull through the boom?
I enclosed a picture of my hatch that I just refinished and I'm mighty proud of...
Nancy and I will not be flying a spinnaker. We will go looking for an asymmetric spinnaker to fly without a pole, but that's as extreme as we'll get.
I'm considering the possibility that we might want to use the pole (in apparently very good shape, just needs paint) to help hoist the dingy...
Hi all,
Hope someone has either a clear answer or strong opinions on this one.
After 4 long years, we have a rig back on our E39 :egrin:, which was originally set up for racing. Now we're in the process of modifying the rig to make it easier for the two of us to cruise.
In putting the...
Goodmorning all. My 82 E33 has an ongoing problem with boom gooseneck loosening up while sailing. Currently the gooseneck slides insinde the aluminum boom and is secured with 3 screws. It seems the forces on boom while sailing continually work the connection of boom/gooseneck and the screws back...
Soliciting ideas on how this might be dealt with and what kind of cost I might be looking at if a yard does the work. This is on an E30+.
This is something I might be able to do myself. It's a Kenyon boom and I believe Rig Rite may be able to supply spare parts; if any aluminum welding is...
Upon inspecting the boom of the 1975 e27 I purchased late last fall, it seems as if the internal mainsail outhaul is jammed.
The play line comes out about 2' in front of the gooseneck, and has a jam cleat just fore of where it comes out (on the port side of the boom).
I made certain the...
Question:
Is there any information within the ‘community’ regarding a mid boom main sheet? My previous boat, an E35 MKII had end boom sheeting with very trick hardware and very nice to operate. My ‘new boat’, an E38-200 has factory stock original mid boom sheeting. The end boom sheeting was...
The black band on my E27 mast has been useful to obtain a rough visual correlation to the position of main halyard, but since my gooseneck is free to slide within the mast luff groove, it doesn't necessarily have a specific relationship to the boom. I am going to secure a different gooseneck...
I am in need of replacing my boom on my E27. Last time out I was flying a new North kevlar reinforced main and it was to much sail for my old bloom and the boom was folded in the middle. But boy did it make the boat go!
Is the spar with the same profile still available? I know I saw the...
Would anyone who knows or has an Ericson 23 MK2 give me a measurement of the height of their boom off the deck or some comparable point of measurement? I am new to this boat, and after looking at a few pictures, the boom appears to be too low. Before I order a new mainsail, I'd like to get it...
I have a broken boom and it ain't fixable. Sooooo, I need to replace it. Don't ask, I did something really stupid.
The extrusion cross-section doesn't appear to be manufactured anymore. I have a new loose-footed main. What are my options? Is there something out there now that I should...
Attached are two pictures I took while giving Shazam her annual bath, one of the sails raised on my E-36 RH and the other is the boom height with the main raised. Right now the boom is the perfect height to knock my block off. I think these are the original Hood sails. When I get new sails is it...
My aluminum boom shows all the signs of being out in the weather for 33 years. I'd like to try giving it a cleaning and polishing, if possible. I have no idea on what to try. Assuming it will behave like an aluminum pot, I'm guessing something like bon ami or bartender's helper cleanser...
I have a Kenyon boom on my 30+. At the mast end of the boom I have exits for my two reef lines. There is an additional bolt next to the sheaves that an avid sailing friend of mine mentioned may have had a rope stopper as an option. This would be something that I would like to get if it does...
A friend in my marina has an E29 , probably 1979 vintage or so and has lost his boom to mast gooseneck. Anyone know what make and where to get a new one??:egrin:
Greetings,
I have a 1990 E34 in Dana Point Ca. and am in need of advice. This week end I was sailing along in about 15 Knots of wind and the center block for my main sheet broke away from the boom. No panic because there are two other blocks attached to the boom. In examining the boom, it...
Was sailing a week ago and noticed what appeared to be bend in the boom in maybe 8kts of breeze going up wind (E 38-200). I never noticed it before, but i never looked. Any concerns of a loose footed main verses bolt roped version? Seems like mid boom sheeting puts some serious loads on the boom...
I have an Garhauer Rigid Boom Vang which I want to install. The mast end is easy, I am using the existing bracket to connect the boom vang. The boom connection requires a stainless plate with three holes on each side to attach to the boom.
My questions:
1. is it better to pop rivet using SS...
Question about exit plates on the boom.
I’m running a jiffy reef system on my '75 E27. I plan to run the line internally through the boom (vs. externally) and run them back to the cockpit for single-handed reefing. I plan to use exit plates on both ends of the boom. Since there are enough...
I broke my gooseneck yesterday as you can see in the attached photos. If they look familiar, they are since I found them from one of Loren's earlier postings. Has anyone replaced this part and if so, what should I expect to pay. I don't like the robustness of this design, there is too little...
I'm a relatively new sailor with an Ericson 38-200. This sailboat does not have a boom vang installed. I'm wondering why it doesn't have one, and if I should add an aftermarket one, a rigid one or otherwise. Any suggestions?
Frank Z.
This spar came off my 1971 Ericson 39. I have completely redone my running rig, and replaced my original boom with a new Ballenger. :egrin: I will be leaving on a cruise soon, and would like to offer this refurbishable boom for free to a fellow Ericson owner who might put it to good use...
Has anyone added a boom bail to a Kenyon boom for attaching mainsheet blocks? My question arises from doing some research online at rigrite.com and seeing that they carry Kenyon bails. Riggingonly.com carries bails and also a 2" x 2.5" ss chafe/external backing plate that they recommend using...
I have an Olson 34 with a Kenyon boom. The boom fits over an aluminum casting that forms the gooseneck. The casting plugs into the boom about 3” and is held in place with 4 evenly spaced s/s screws around the perimeter edge of the boom. Apparently there is enough play in this connection to...
Went for a sail yesterday and noticed when putting the boat away that the sheaves in my boom were in pretty worn shape. The ones in the aft end of the boom I removed. I noticed on the outhaul car that there are some small wheels that I want to replace as well. Hoping that Kenyon can help with...
I am looking to change my boom to internal outhaul, and reefing lines, and possibly a rigid vang. I have not yet identified the boom section. Can anyone suggest a vendor, for parts, and suggest what boom section might work?
I've had to replace my original Sparcraft boom. The end castings are available if anyone is interested. $25 bucks and postage aughta do it.

Has anyone moved the mainsheet on an E38 closer to the binnacle? I have a plan all worked out in my devious little head of a way to do it (and have it be temporary/easily changed back) but if someone has a better way, please let me know so I can save some time from the experimentation stage...
I would not have thought finding a suitable replacement for my E27's boom would be such a frustrating ordeal here in the Pacific Northwest. After researching this web site I called all of the manufacturers mentioned. Pacific Seacraft recommended LeFiel. LeFiel was surprised by this and said they...
On my restoration of my e28+, I would like to drill and tap a few holes in the boom, mast and possibly the spreaders to install new running rigging. I have also seen other masts with holes drilled at the bottom to allow water to drain. I cautious about drilling and tapping too many holes for...
Has anyone installed a reigid boom vang on a 30+?
I am concerned that I will interfere with opening of the aft hatch. Actually, appears it would be rendered near useless.
Thanks
Saunders
The gooseneck fitting for my mainsail boom came out of the boom.
For a picture see:
http://www.hogtimemusic.com/photos/gooseneck.jpg
Two of the three screw holes in the boom appear to have worn over time to become slots.
Looking for any suggestions for a fix.
I'm thinking of...
My standard rig E-29, which I bought 6 weeks ago, has a boom of 10' instead of the 12 ' boom (it was replaced about 20 years ago after the original boom broke). As I'm planning to get a new mainsail, I would like to know if e-29 owners in the SF Bay Area feel like they are easily overpowered...
In the process of inspecting my rigging this year, I somehow convinced myself that adding height to the mast, length to the boom, and upgrading the spinnaker pole to carbon were all good ideas.
Hence I now must dispose of the original equipment, which is in reasonable condition for it's age...
Looking for insights ...
We've now had La Petite long enough to appreciate her sailing prowess even under her current crummy sail inventory.
For those who weren't reading at the time, La Petite is a fin keel E23-MKII and the main is about a foot short in the foot, in addition to being...
I just bought a 1973 Ericson 27 and have not sailed her yet. This will be my first season. I found out today that the boom needs to be repalced. Can anyone tell me where to find one? (Preferably used but good)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much
Jayne Terry...
I have a '70 Ericson 30 slipped at Lake Mead, Nevada. I do not have a boom vang installed and am looking for direction on if the boom is capable of a boom vang and secondly does anyone know the proper measurements?
I don't want to weaken the boom and am apprehensive about drilling holes...
Hi guys. New boat for me. Mine is '76. Has pedistal steering. Came w/ Harken furler, MPS sail/sock & complete selection of sails Would the addition of a boom vang be a logical improvement? Thanks, in advance, for the pros and cons.
I'm just curious if there are any examples of Dodgers and/or Boom Tents for the E23 ?
In cool wet climates I suspect a Boom Tent would come in very handy as a living space extender, at anchor in the evening. In warmer areas a bimini would probably see more use, but I'm less interested in...
I have a loose bolt at the end of the boom, securing the mainsheet and topping lift to the boom. I tried to remove the end cap screws to tighten, and the screws sheared off.
Is the just a cap that you can just pop off, if I drill out the screws?
Or is it something much more sinister???
Been sailing with a bent boom and an old main for about a year. I think It might be time to replace both. Used would be a little more realistic.
Any thoughts let me know.:egrin:
I purchased my E29 last year. the boom is equipped with a hand-crank roller mechanism (I assume for reefing). Was this an option offered by Ericson or an add-on by a previous owner?
If anyone else has this type of boom, I would like to know some of the details of how the mainsail foot is...
A while ago I posted that I was looking for a boom for my E29 tall rig. After much searching I have found a boom that is slighly too long. My idea was to just cut it down, but I would still rather find something that is aready the right size. So if anyone knows of somewhere or someone that could...
I just refinished my spars with LP and upon disassembly of the boom to gooseneck (in order to paint only the extrusions), the connection between the end cap and the stud thru it to the gooseneck was a bear to seperate.
A machinist was able to seperate by a hydraulic press, but the part was as...
Re: Rudder re-design
An excellent top priority! The 37 was designed by my dad
for the 1 ton cup and we owned hull #1 for a while and
campaigned her heavily. She would not be my first choice
for a round the world cruise but that's just my opinion. The
37, 39, and 46 all have similar...
Anyone know what make of spar & boom came standard on 1972 29' model ericson? Need to obtain an external gooseneck slide and it would help to identify boom. Also if anyone has source for such hardware please share.
[FONT=arial][COLOR=purple]I am currently purchasing a 1973 E29. I know it has the tall rig, but the boom is missing! I can get a new one made but would rather go with a gently used one to save some $$$$! Any suggestions?
