It's time to replace my wire-rope halyards. I've read various books and postings on the benefits of converting from wire-rope halyards to all-rope. My question, therefore, is not whether or not I should make the conversion, but how best to make it.
My existing wire is 7 x 19, 5/32 inch. The...
Getting ready to replace the rope/wire halyards on my E30+ with all rope. I have read a few related threads and was going to go with Sta-Set X. I also considered T-900, but the cost is triple that of Sta-Set X. Any reason not to go with the Sta-Set X? I think 3/8" will be sufficient.
I was...
I am about to replace the standing and running rigging on my E32-3. The boat will be used for cruising and club racing. Perhaps an offshore passage to Cuba or Key West from the St. Pete area.
I intend to go with low stretch lines for sheets and control lines. Recommendations for types of...
Recent owner of a 85 30+. I have heard pros and cons of running the mainsheet through a rope clutch located forward of the starboard cabin mounted winch. Some have said this is a must. Others have said they would never do this.
Right now my mainsheet is simply wrapped around the self tailing...
I need to order some spinnaker sheets and the genoa sheets could do with replacement too. The fraying of the docklines (that was fast !) may also warrant attention.
I'm only talking about a few 100 feet. Would Defender or Jamestown or one of the regular on-line chandleries be best or are...
Few days ago, I noticed that one of the bolts holding the port-side rope clutch (serves jib and spinnaker halyards) is leaking ... I took it out, then noticed that the wooden block which the rope clutch sits on is in bad shape - the forward edge (in the direction of pull) has started to crumble...
I'm installing Andersen 40 ST winches port and starboard on the cabin top. The base on these winches is a higher profile than the Barients I removed. I'd like to raise the rope clutches about half an inch with some kind of base. I thought of using starboard but I'm concerned that starboard's...
My 35-3 has wire halyards. The main seems to be in good shape but the jib halyard is showing a few broken strands. The wire halyards seem like a good idea but for the fact that they are hard to replace. I would like to switch to a more standard rope halyard (Dacron?). Any gotchas and/or...
Loren,
I'm about to buy a new main and I'm looking for opinions on loose footed vs bolt rope style. My Newport 28 currently has a bolt rope on the boom but North Sails now uses loose footed. You sail here on the river and I think you cruise and race. I really just daysail or cruise. Your...
All, I'm in need of a pair of older rope clutches for the coachroof to hold two halyards. I just can't work out the space for a second #16 Barlow winch in the tight space there so am defaulting to one winch (already there) and two clutches. The type I want are two open cams on a metal base...
In changing over the mainsail from a rope bolt to slugs I've ran across a problem.
Where the rope bolt used to go into the mast is the feeder - a large section of the mast track that is wide enough to fit the rope bolt.
So now the problem; when you raise, lower or stack the slugs they all fall...

The starter rope on my Evinrude 6 motor broke. I can pull out the motor and take it to a shop, but the thing is greasy, smelly, and heavy. I think maybe I can replace it myself and avoid a lot of trouble. Any instruction online? Thanks.
Robert
Some time ago there was a discussion about using all rope halyards instead of rope to wire. I have a E-27 and want to create a longer halyard so I can create a fair leeds to the cockpit. I would also be interested in knowing the best way to accomplish bringing the line aft. Any photos would...
