You beat us to making an offer, Mark. I hope all goes well, and you become the new owner of “Sterling.”

Sorry I am late to this discussion. I am sure you will love the 36c. We have had ours for 2 years now and love her. She is currently on the hard getting a new bottom done.
Glad to hear of another new 36c owner.
cheers.
JC

Mark, when do you think you’ll be bringing her home? I know you asked about places to anchor along the way. Others will probably weigh in.
We tend to hop from yacht club to yacht club along the south shore of the lake, rather than drop a hook. There’s a club about every 30 miles with reciprocal privileges with free or reduced rates, and many have transient slips for the public. Near most yacht clubs, there’s also a marina at the same port, which is usually at the outlet of a river into the Lake. From Port Credit, you can cross to Wilson or Olcott, then stop at Oak Orchard, next Rochester. At Rochester, you can anchor in Irondequoit Bay, which is protected, though a little shallow at the entrance. From Rochester, you can go to Sodus Bay, which has a number of good anchorages, or go another dozen miles to FairHaven (Little Sodus) which also has protected anchorages. Next stop will be Oswego and the entrance to the canal. A good resource for info on the Lake is Ports, which gets published every year or so.

This is great information that I can map and plan on. I would like to reach out to you to talk more on this subject in the near future.

Make sure you get familiar with how these boats handle before getting it to any tight situations at marinas or yacht club slips. The prop is offset to port and with the rubber off the back they prop walk to port hard. You need to get some good water movement to get the rudder grab.

Johnathan,
30 hp
this is a late response but RE: Prop walk. At this moment, I have motor/sailed Sterling II for 5 days and your notes regarding prop walk are spot on.

Of note: The owner repowered Sterling II with a 30 Hp Penta Volvo. At that time there was a discussion with Volvo and a recommended purchase of a reverse prop which the owner followed by did not install.

I am going to replace the original prop with the one recommended and try it out next season. I will update this blog when I have a better understanding of how this is going to work.

Windblown,

I ended up stopping a Mimico Bay, Whitby, and Cobourg, then making the 55 nm jump to Rochester and then then 48 nm jump to Oswego May 12th, 2025

As if June 12th, 2025 the Oswego and Erie canals are open for me to make the trip from Oswego to New York.

Of Note: The western branch of the Erie is still closed between E-24 and E-25.

I wondered if you’d gotten caught in the canal system due to the high water. Glad to hear you took the northern route. Hope all continues to go well, Mark.

4 weeks after puling onto Oswego, the last navigation alert is below -
Notice to Mariners
Opening Update: Oswego Canal Lock O-1 to Lock O-8
June 13, 2025

The New York State Canal Corporation today announced the following update:
The Oswego Canal, Oswego Canal Lock O-1 in Phoenix to Lock O-8 in Oswego will open for navigation on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.

Additional Information for Mariners
Boaters transiting between Lock E-8 in Rotterdam and Lock E-16 in St. Johnsville may experience low water as the Canal Corporation removes debris from the movable dams and resets water control structures after the recent high flow event.

Erie Canal Lock E-24 in Baldwinsville, Erie Canal Lock E-25 in Mays Point, Cayuga – Seneca Canal Lock CS-1 in Cayuga, remain closed to navigation due to high water and unsafe conditions. An announcement regarding the reopening of these areas of the Canal system will be made in a subsequent Notice to Mariners.

Boaters who are navigating the open sections of the Canal system should be aware of floating debris generated by recent heavy rainfall and proceed with caution, at a "No Wake" speed as some debris may be hard to see.

I have a flight to Syracuse June 25th, and expect to enter the Oswego canal the 28th. New York here I come!

After 7 weeks of rain, flooding, canal washed car removal, lock and bridge damage, the Champlain, Erie, and Oswego canals are fully open.

Wednesday, June 25th, I head back to Oswego to continue the trip interruptus. Along the way, I have scheduled meetings with fellow Coast Guard Auxiliary members and tours of their respective stations.

Note: This months virtual meeting is canceled, a July meeting will be scheduled on my return.
