E36C Recovery

As I recover from the recent loss of my 30+ Ericson, I am surfing the internet for a replacement. there is a E-36C 1077 posted as an estate sale on Lake Champlain. It has my interest as she has always been in fresh water and she has been land bound for an uncertain time.

I am interested in fellow E-36C owners opinions and thoughts on what to look for in an on-site inspection

This sounds like the one we looked at in 2019. If you KNOW what you're doing, it might be a good deal for you. 36C is an incredibly roomy boat. Unfortunately for us, we saw too many red flags that we just didn't have the time nor expertise to deal with. The worst thing was that when we felt around the ceiling in the cabin, a lot of rotted wood fell out. We took this as telling us the entire deck may need to be repaired.
If you know what you're doing - I'd hate to see this otherwise beautiful boat on the scrap heap. It needs work, but in the right hands would once again be a gem.
This boat has not always been in fresh water. The sellers told us how their father had often sailed the Atlantic coast in it.

Well, Mark, you’ve got me dreaming now. I’ve felt the pull of the 36C for awhile. There’s one sitting on its cradle at the marina next to ours. When she came out of the water about 8 years ago, she looked to be in reasonable condition, but I liked the allure of the racer side of our 32-3 then, and the 36C looked like too much boat for us. That boat was listed off and on, but didn’t sell. I drive/walk by her a couple of times a year, and It looks like someone might be doing some work on the bottom, but mostly, she’s just in slow decline. Now, this boat you’ve found. . .!

Debora,

I am on the East Coast, my current marina is in Rhode Island so I am looking for something that will not cost to truck. I seriously looked at the Olsen 911e on this site. It is a great deal for those of us near her but the cost of trucking is a deal killer for me. This is my why of asking where your marina is located because if it is in my neck of the woods, I would take a look at her.

Mark,
I’m in Rochester, NY, at the Genesee River outlet to Lake Ontario. The boat is in a field shared by Shumway Marine and RCR Yachts. You could take her east to the Hudson via the NY canal system. The boat’s named “La Vie Dansante“ and I found this listing on several brokerage sites:

At this point, I’m sure the price is very negotiable.

This boat has a Volvo D1 30 b, installed in 2007. I haven’t seen many positive comments about Volvo here. Would this engine be a dealbreaker?

Never had a Volvo but know a few folks that have. From what I know I think they're pretty reliable. It's the parts that are costly if needed. If the hours aren't crazy high and it's been maintained it wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me personally.

I would buy the boat planning/budgeting to replace it with a Betamarine or a Yanmar.
And make my $ offer accordingly. This would not be such a giant step, since the first project would be to pull the shaft, review/renew the stern gear and also check on the lower gudgeon, anyway.

Debra,

I have seen the pictures of this one and she looks like years of neglect. I am sure she would have a nice price but I am concerned about the time and cost of rehab.

Not sure who is shopping and who is not ? But anyway here is a rare example up in the northeast...I'm tempted to go at this one !
At this moment, I am looking at this 1983 E-33, a 1988 E-34, and a 1978 E 36C.

Posted prices range from 25,000, 24,000, and 53,000. Then my son wants me to take his 1977 Cape Dory 27 free.

Pros and Cons for each one as expected, luxury - E 36C fully decked out to cross oceans or weekend camper. 33 with needed maintenance or 34 with 6.7 keel.

I am waiting on divine intervention to make the call and anyway it is the middle of winter and snow just started flying.

I choose the E-36 C.
Pros
1. health related - age, bad back, and expected level of physical capability over the next 10 years, and
2. Comfort Accommodations - electric windlass, gas heater, air conditioning, enclosed cockpit, and lots of storage.

Con - Cost of Total Ownership
