Not "folly".... smarter to buy the smallest boat that meets your real needs, and then you can afford to maintain it completely -- enjoying both safety and comfort.
The sailing world (and power boating, too, one would presume) is full of owners with too much boat and purchase expense, and little or no money left each year for maint. and upgrades.
