Captain
As my boat is also a mature 35 II I had to deal with the same problem. Rather than change out the wiring I simply replaced all general lighting with LED bulbs (www.superbriteleds.com) and only have 12 v bulbs in the V Berth for reading.
If I need to study I can change out my chart table light to a 12v.
All in all I have found that I have more than enough battery for my lighting when at anchor.
I have avoided changing out the running lights to LEDs because I sense they are not as visible at night-though I stand ready to be corrected.
Most of the wiring I seen in my boat is #12 solid
