ACTUALLY THESE TYPES OF TACK RINGS ARE MORE TYPICALLY USED WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE A FURLER AND ARE USING A HEADFOIL. THE TACK RINGS ON THE SAIL SLIDE OVER THE HOOKS. THERE ARE TWO OF THEM SO THAT WHEN YOU ARE SAILING FOR EXAMPLE WITH THE 150 AND IT IS TIME TO CHANGE TO THE SMALLER SAIL (OR VICE VERSA), YOU CAN HOIST THE NEW SAIL IN THE UNUSED GROOVE AND PLACE THE TACK RING AROUND THE UNUSED HOOK. ONCE THE NEW SAIL IS FULLY HOISTED AND TRIMMED YOU DROP THE OLD ONE.
IF GOING UPWIND A "TACK-CHANGE" IS MUCH EASIER: PUT YOURSELF ON A TACK WHERE THE SAIL BEING USED IS ON THE LEE GROOVE, AND HOIST THE NEW SAIL ON THE UNUSED, WINDWARD GROOVE. IF YOU START THE PROCESS ON PORT TACK (WITH THE ORIGINAL SAIL IN THE STARBOARD GROOVE), RUN THE SHEET FOR THE NEW SAIL ON THE PORT SIDE (AS FOR STARBOARD TACK). ONCE THE NEW SAIL IS HOISTED (BUT NOT TRIMMED), GO AHEAD AND TACK, TRIMMING IN THE NEW SAIL. THE OLD SAIL (WHOSE SHEET WOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED AS YOU TACKED), WILL NOW BE LAYING AGAINST THE NEW SAIL, AND PREVENTED FROM GOING ANYWHERE. YOU CAN LOWER THE HALYARD FOR THE OLD SAIL AND GATHER IT EASILY SINCE IT IS BEING KEPT FROM GOING ANYWHERE BY THE NEW SAIL WHICH IS SHEETED IN TIGHT...
