I just bought this 1988 Ericson 38 and I was wondering what these 2 hooks are on the bow just left of the anchor, what are they for. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

Tack Hooks?

I have not had a hanked on headsail since my ODay Mariner in the 70's, but I suspect these are where the tack would connect for a hanked on foresail. I am sure you will get a more thorough response from some of the more experienced folks on the site.

Yup, Tack Hook is the answer

Tack hooks for the times you remove the furler genny and remove that Harken split drum... and then use several different head sails (with luff tapes) on your double-headfoil head stay. Usually when racing.

Most of us retired racers just stick to one "all around" furling genny... 'cause we're lazy...

It sure is Nice to sail an honest-to-Neptune "racer cruiser" designed and built to do a lot more than just be a dockside condo.

Thanks. I got 2 head sails with the boat. One is a 150 and the other is 100. I can't hank on a sail with a roller furler I guess. So not much use for these sails.

ACTUALLY THESE TYPES OF TACK RINGS ARE MORE TYPICALLY USED WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE A FURLER AND ARE USING A HEADFOIL. THE TACK RINGS ON THE SAIL SLIDE OVER THE HOOKS. THERE ARE TWO OF THEM SO THAT WHEN YOU ARE SAILING FOR EXAMPLE WITH THE 150 AND IT IS TIME TO CHANGE TO THE SMALLER SAIL (OR VICE VERSA), YOU CAN HOIST THE NEW SAIL IN THE UNUSED GROOVE AND PLACE THE TACK RING AROUND THE UNUSED HOOK. ONCE THE NEW SAIL IS FULLY HOISTED AND TRIMMED YOU DROP THE OLD ONE.

IF GOING UPWIND A "TACK-CHANGE" IS MUCH EASIER: PUT YOURSELF ON A TACK WHERE THE SAIL BEING USED IS ON THE LEE GROOVE, AND HOIST THE NEW SAIL ON THE UNUSED, WINDWARD GROOVE. IF YOU START THE PROCESS ON PORT TACK (WITH THE ORIGINAL SAIL IN THE STARBOARD GROOVE), RUN THE SHEET FOR THE NEW SAIL ON THE PORT SIDE (AS FOR STARBOARD TACK). ONCE THE NEW SAIL IS HOISTED (BUT NOT TRIMMED), GO AHEAD AND TACK, TRIMMING IN THE NEW SAIL. THE OLD SAIL (WHOSE SHEET WOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED AS YOU TACKED), WILL NOW BE LAYING AGAINST THE NEW SAIL, AND PREVENTED FROM GOING ANYWHERE. YOU CAN LOWER THE HALYARD FOR THE OLD SAIL AND GATHER IT EASILY SINCE IT IS BEING KEPT FROM GOING ANYWHERE BY THE NEW SAIL WHICH IS SHEETED IN TIGHT...

ANYWAY, A LONG WAY OF EXPLAINING WHAT THE RINGS ARE FOR..

Thanks for all that info., its good to know our own boat when someone asks "Hey what does that thing do?"
