Thought i would pass this along. I had my boat hauled for annual maint about three months ago and was disheartened by the barnacle growth on the prop. I don't like the idea of painting a prop, corrosion and such. So I was asking the yard what they've heard of to help. One of the dock...
I am thinking of using Cukote bottom paint by Sea Hawk. Myhighly regarded local yard began using it. I've always used Micron CSC or Extra. I repaint between 1.5 and 2.5 years. I am in an area of slime buildup, with brackish water. It's rather new I think, made in the usa.
Any experience?
Was to have the bottom soda blasted in late October, but the yard still has not done it yet. Should I be worried about time to dry it out before they get at the blisters?
I need to pull my E29 from the water to change the prop, and I need to sand and recoat the bottom. I haven't done this since owning the boat (over a year now) and would really like to get a good look at the bottom, the zincs, the thru hull fittings, change the carrier bearing in the prop shaft...
At the Annapolis Sailboat Show the other day I spent some time with the Coppercoat rep. Coppercoat - multiseason antifouling. 10 years protection with this hard wearing copper filled epoxy resin marine antifoul treatment for antifouling.

Does anyone have first...
Does anyone know what the original color barrier coat my 32-200 would have had? It looks like the current barrier coat, under years of ablative paint, is black. She was built in 1988.
Were Ericsons shipped with black bottoms?
Paul
This is my third season with my 1988 E32-200. Her bottom is a little rough but shows no signs of blistering. I have many coats of ablative paint that is checking and cracking. The whole bottom needs to be stripped and barrier coated in the next few years. I'm am looking for someone in the...
A couple of seasons ago when hauling our E32 out for winter the we had some minor damage done to the hull in the area that typically is below the waterline. A pad flipped the wrong way as the boatyard guys were lowering the boat on to the cradle and the post that the pad is attached to created...
Anyone have any experience using water based bottom paint? I'm looking at Pettit Hydrocoat for my E-38. I hear it is great paint, and Sea Ray apparently used it exclusively on their boats.
I may have to remove it all in the fall for servicing the hull, and I am thinking Hydrocoat would be...
I am new to having a boat in a slip in salt water (Los Angeles), and wonder what is a normal schedule for having the bottom cleaned? I know it needs new bottom ASAP, but even so is a bottom cleaning every month normal? the bottom cleaning diver in the neighborhood is telling me it is. Any...
Hello All,
This past season was a terrible year for marine growth here in RI. Many boaters I know had heavy growth problems regardless of type of paint, etc. My boat was on its second year in the water so the paint was getting long in the tooth, even though it was multi-season rated. I had...
Hi all,
I would like to get some feedback from experienced boat owners about the questionable results of a bottom cleaning service I recently had performed. There was a verbal agreement beforehand to have the hull of my Ericson 29 cleaned for an estimate of $60. I later received a bill for...
The yard that painted the bottom of my boat at the end of February has agreed to repaint it due to problems that have developed with the paint.
They have also agreed to paint it with Trinidad SR if I pay the difference in the cost over their "normal" paint.
My boat is in Channel Islands...
Has anyone had the bottom of their boats Soda Blasted?
If so, what were the costs?
Also.....the positives and negatives.
I have been quoted a ludicrous figure (at least it appears so to me) per foot.
What are some of the prices paid, or quotes received?
All,
After a few years of working WAY WAY too much, I found my way back to ErisonYachts.org. WOW..... what a really nice site. The wealth and breadth of knowledge as well as members is amazing. I still have me ol' 1972 E- 35 MKII now located here in San Diego (South Bay). Sad to say, I work...
Hi All, I hate to bother you with something this basic but we bought our E27 at the end of last summer, first boat, had a great time on the water, winterized it, got it hauled and covered, the cover's off and now it's time to paint the bottom. Never did that before. The current paint job is in...
I'm applying Interlux 2000e to my hull after spending the past few weekends stripping my E35 to the gelcoat. What kills me about this product is that I spent weeks stripping, sanding and fairing my hull to a beautiful smooth finish and then the 2000e goes on with an orange peel texture that...
I've worked a little with epoxy and FRP (FG over plywood on my small homebuilt speedboat as a kid and various small epoxy jobs) but I really don't know anything about it.
Reading various articles all over the place and on the West Systems pages, I get the impression that exposed wood...
I bought Sassy last April and decided that if was going to keep her for a while some preventative maintenance would go a long way. I had her peeled down to the glass over the holidays. The gel coat will be replaced with a new epoxy bottom. This is the second boat I have peeled. I learned a...
Hello,
Well for my first project I want to remove the Tiller / Rudder and repaint it. This will be a test run (for doing the entire bottom this spring) and first time using bottom paint for me.
I do not know what type of paint is on the bottom currently. (Hey Sven what type of paint is...
Is there anyone who has used Seahawk Sharkskin bottom paint and liked it? It is a "hard modified epoxy" with 50% copper. I use Trinidad SR with very good results in the cold water here, hauling after three years. It is compatible with Trinidad SR, according to the brochure, just paint right over...
That time of year again ... I'll be applying bottom paint before going back in the water in late March and do not plan on takeout again for 2 years. In the past I've used Interlux Micron Extra Multi Year ablative paint and its worked well - but pricey$$.. I was wondering if anyone has...
Has anyone tried the new Fluorinated polyurethane paints? I have been reading about them and they seem to work as a water barrier, slime or hard growth doesn't bond to them and they are supposed to last much longer than an antifouling paint.
The price is high but if a bottom job lasts seven...
Okay, we have our haul out coming in a few weeks and I want to remove all the old bottom paint and apply a new epoxy barrier coat before repainting again with bottom paint. We tried sanding/grinding/etc. last time and were not up to the task ourselves, so we have been thinking about having it...
This is really weird, but I'm seeing it on two boats now, and thought I'd throw it out to see if anyone else has run into this. In short, fiberglass repair below the waterline using West System epoxy. On the repairs, followed the standard procedures for washing off amino blush using Scotch...
I've recently began the task of stripping the old bottom paint off of my 1982 E-38. I began the job using a small 3/4" wide scraping tool. It worked, but man, my wrists are killing me!
I then tried Soy Strip. Practial Sailor gave this stuff good ratings. It does work but it is very messy and...
Seems like there are as many opinions about bottom paints as there are choices. Micron? Trinidad? Which is holds up best against the barnacle rife waters of Florida? I want blue, she wants red and contends red has better anti-fouling properties. Does color make any difference?
Also, Back...
I am looking at the list of things to do over the winter and one of them is new bottom paint. In the past I have used a single season hard ablative but likely the boat will be in the water for the following winter so I am looking at multi-season paint. IIRC the Interlux Micron is a good...
Time to repaint the bottom of Penguin. Wondering what my fellow southern california brethren suggest as paint? Seems that products change every few years
I open to all suggestion?
John
How often should the bottom be cleaned? I thought that once per month was sufficient until I got a bill from the diver showing that he had started cleaning every three weeks without notifying me. When I called him on it, he said that it should be every two weeks.
Thanks,
Charles
I have an Ericson 23, which I just bought that needs some bottom work. It is presently on a trailer. Any suggestions on how to support it off of the trailer to make working and painting the bottom easier. Thanks.
Hello all,
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p>
Is any one can tell me how many cans of paint do I need for <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas:contacts" /><st1:Sn>Ericson</st1:Sn> 32-3 to paint the bottom?
What brands of paint and...
Has anyone used Pettit's Bio Blast product to remove bottom paint? There are a couple of positive reviews on the WM website but I'd sure like to hear first hand from someone who has used the product.
Gary
I'm sure I've gone about this the slow and tedious way, but I have used an electric DA sander w/ 60 grit paper attached to a vac system to grind away my old anti fouling paint. The process was actually not as slow as I expected, I'm about 3/4 of the way through the removal. With the vac...
This winter, I'm going to have my boat bottom professionally stripped and painted. The bottom itself seems to be in great shape.
A friend recommended that a barrier coat(s) of 10 mils be applied, before the bottom paint.
Any thoughts on this?
Greg

E-23 skank bottom or, bottom cleaning & maint
greetings....after picking up a e23 thats been sitting in the salt water for a number of years...i want to get her cleaned up, painted, and set for colorado lake sailing up around boulder, co...question is...take a l@@k at the photos below and give...
Last fall 20 some years of nasty bottom paint was removed from our 82 E33. Between 2.5 gallons of Soy Stripe and many 1 inch razor blades, I got down to gel coat. Launch date came before barrier coat could be applied, so she splashed with a thin coat of cheap bottom paint. Kind of lucky for me...
This spring I bought a 1976 E-27, hull number 912, boat name Cantata, in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The surveyer report says that the cabin bulkhead has had water damage due to a leaking upper starboard chainplate. The recommendation is to cut off the bottom 4 inches of the bulkhead, and fit in new...
Forgot to ask this on my last post... any recommendations on bottom paint? She is in pretty good shape and we just will need to lightly sand and re-apply.
Also - what color looks the coolest? Her hull is white with navy blue and green stripe.
Thanks!
up here in alaska there seems to be very minimal growth
on my bottom- wondering about just a touch-up paint before
i put her back in the water this season (which would be a whole
lot easier to do, on the trailer, w/o having to pay for a haul out
just for this)-
any reason i can't just...
Anyone have experience with this stuff? I am going to be spraying 2 coats this year and then polishing. A friend used it last year on his race boat with good luck but maybe others have something to add?
Hey there,
probably not a good time to ask this question as the boat goes in the water in a couple of days and I really do not want to do anything about it anyway but......i had drilled a few holes 1/4 inch drill bit in the bottom of the keel to drain the water out of the sump/keel....i...
Ok here we go...
I bought this 74 27 ericson knowing it had blisters and that i would have to deal with them. Here is my current situation:
I have sanded off the bottom paint and have now encountered what i beleive to be interlux barrier coat (light grey coating )with a light green...
I pulled my Avon raft out after a full season, and found white scaling on the bottom, or some type of shell attached to the bottom. Any hints on taking it off?
Thanks

I will soon be hauling my 1971 E-29 for new bottom paint. I would like to remove what is left of the existing bottom paint, apply a new barrier (primer) coat, then apply new anti-foul. The yard won't allow sanding or grinding. Any suggestions on products and procedures? Thanks, Ray Hughes...
I still have a 1/2 gallon of Micron CSC left over from last year. Anyone know of a reason why I shouldn't use it up when painting the bottom this year, i.e. does it go "bad"? I looked at it and the pigment is sitting under a coating of oil and seems like it just needs to be stirred up.
I will be painting the bottom and was wondering if 3 gals was enough> Bottom is in great shape and I will be hauling in the fall, just wondering if 3 gals will get it done?
Here's one to stir things up a little: I have read many different descriptions of how to prepare a fast bottom, some of which are contradictory in terms of what degree of smoothness to attain. When my boat (fresh water) has not been cleaned in a week or two, it has a thin coating of real slick...
I found a little water dripping from the very bottom of the keel of a 1971 Ericson 29'. The boat otherwise is in excellent condition. Can anyone tell what is going on here?
I had a boat yard peel the gel-coat off the bottom of my boat and, at there recomendation, apply interprotect 2000 directly to the bare(gel-coat removed) laminate. I now find out that they should have sealed the hull with interprotect 1000 first, as the 2000 has a solvent in it that could wick...
My 1971 e-29 "Capricious" , moored in Oceanside Harbor, needs bottom paint. Any recommendations as to a yard where I can do the initial prep work myself? Best yard for the complete job? Best products to use? Thanks, Ray.
:boohoo: I just purchased a 30+ Ericson and the surveyor told me I would need new bottom paint. The survey states a prep and bottom paint. Well I have since had it hauled out and the boat yard says I need a new bottom, period. To the tune of $3600.00. Do I have any recourse against the...
Thanks to all the replies to my previous posting requesting advice on bottom paint removal. I finally had my 1984 E38 hauled out and decided to go with having the yard sand (or grind) off the 19 years of paint accumulation. The decision to go this route was made after reading the 12 submitted...
I am about to haul out my 1984 E38 and want to strip the bottom paint off to bare gel coat (2 coats of paint applied every 2 to 3 years). I would like to hear any ones experience in doing this with paint strippers such a Peel Away. Thanks, Peter
Greetings,
I am looking for a trustworthy service that does monthly bottom cleaning, zinc inspections, and whatever else they check for. My boat is at Harbor Island. I have seen a couple of different wet-suited men doing this, but I would like to hear from some satisfied customers before...
Ok -
I'm going to be hauling out and painting my bottom next month. Any advice on what paint is best to use - or ones to avoid? I need to do my boot and sheer stripe as well. It's in salt water - in a coolish environment (Puget Sound).
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
