Which head is the best buy?
All, I'm with David here. The initial cost of a used Wilcox Crittenden or a used Groco K-H (both high end models) with the addition of a rebuild kit add up to well less than $200.00 and are so good that a generation from now they'll still be working flawlessly and if not can be made to without the need of buying a plastic pump assembly but an individual rubber flapper valve or the like. I've been in that plastic pump assembly purchasing cycle where its cost is so close to buying an entire replacement, invariably most folks end up doing the latter. I have the Groco K-H, paid $45.00 for it at Minney's and have about $15.00 or $20.00 in repair parts invested in it for a total of around $65.00. I might add that the head was one of the first things I changed in our boat close to 15 years ago and it's still working like a champ. The very same Raritan model that's being reverenced her is the one that needed a new pump in our boat and I'd already had enough experience with the plastic bodied pump assemblies needing somewhat frequent replacement when I had the cheap Groco model in our old E25+. It's not always the case that the cheapest is the best buy but suit yourself.
