outboard motor for Ericson 25

I purchased an Ericson 25 last spring. The previous owner exchanged the original motor for a 9.9 Suzuki which is interfeering with the rudder when turning sharply. I hear that the proper motor should have a long shaft. Could anybody advise which is the best type of motor (brand name, etc.) Thanks

I doubt that there is a simple answer...
And there are several "right" answers...
but we were very happy with the 10 hp Yamaha Hi-Thrust outboard on our prior 4000 # boat.
That engine had the 25 inch leg.
It also had a removable shift and throttle assembly for remote mounting on sailboats.
I believe that it nowadays comes with power tilt.
It consumed only a half gallon of gas per hour at 5.8 knots, and was very quiet. There is now, also, an 8 hp version of that engine.

One thing to consider is mounting -- we were fortunate in having a transom cut-out. I would not have liked having an outboard (of any kind) on a bracket.

Best,
