We have some water leaking from a small hole (about the size of a dime) in the bottom corner of the ice box enclosure. We are thinking it could be the drain hose connection for the ice box, but the ice box is all enclosed so we see no way to access the drain connection. Any ideas?
Looking for some advice on replacement of the prop shaft stuffing box hose. The original stuffing box and shaft log seem to be 1 5/8". The original stuffing box hose was 4 ply. The 1 5/8" does not seem to be a common size for stuffing box replacements so a new 4 ply hose does not seem to be...
Anyone know what size of packing that is inside the Atomic 4 powered stuffing box? My prop shaft is 3/4 inch. I see that West Marine has a wide variety of sizes of teflon packing. Any help would be much appreciated.
Its time to haul our new to us Ericson for all those projects that can only be done on the hard. POs have done no maintenance on the shaft seal and it needs either repacking or thinking about replacing with a PSS seal any thoughts or experience in this area could really use some advice as its a...
Hello All,
I'm replacing the stuffing box on my E38 with a new Buck-Algonquin unit. The unit specs 1/4" packing, and in the pic below you will see that I have installed three turns of material into the gland nut. Notice the stop nut on the stuffing box spud. That is how far the gland nut...
I am looking to re-pack the stuffing box on our E28. I was reading about Gore GFO. Does anyone have experience with that product, or any similar product? I have never repacked a stuffing box before. Is this a job one person can handle with the boat still in the water? Any advice...
Hello All,
I remember some time back that there was a excellent stuffing box info, put together with pic's. I copied it but can not find it on the Mac. Anybody remember the link?? Rod
I am looking for any information on replacing the coaming box on my 38-200. Not sure if this was standard on these models however mine is cracked and falling apart. I have removed it and am looking for a replacment with similar size.

I was intrigued by the ad that GFO has on their web site www.stuffingboxpacking.com where they claim no leakage after the initial adjustment. I have been thinking about installing a dripless packing but the idea of a much cheaper solution sounds good. Does anyone have any experience with this...
Here in the Florida panhandle my marine stores two suppliers don't carry a 1 3/8 stuffing box hose. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one?

I’m doing a refit on my 79 Ericson 30. Thruhulls, shaft, packing box, engine rebuild, headliner & cabin siding, cushions, perhaps some portlights. I must be nuts doing it all at once.

Once again, looking for opinions on what this might cost to have a yard do the work.
This is what most likely caused the shaft coupling corrosion, but is probably the least expensive to fix...except that the shaft will have to be removed to replace the connecting hose, which is sketchy at this...
Have any of you had sucess with a nasty looking stuffing box ? I'm afraid I'm going to be snapping the heads off and re-drilling. Is there anything special about this eybolt ?

Hi All,
Last night I had a very unfortunate accident. I was out sailing in 20+ knots of air and did not take my cowl vent off the dorade box. During a tack my jib sheet wrapped itself around the cowl vent and ripped the cowl vent and teak cover of the box off and in the drink. What I now...
I replaced my stuffing box and am not sure if I am seeing the right results. I used the flax size recommended by the dealer who supplied it. I used a Teflon based flax. It was very challenging to get into the packing nut. I had to push in in carefully with a screwdriver and use a little Teflon...
Has anyone had their icebox drain get plugged? Mine is plugged and I need
to gain access to the underside of the box. Cut a hole?
Any help would be great. Thanks
I heard this week about Frigoboat and their divided refrigerator boxes. Is there anyone who has partitioned their refrigerator and uses the Frigoboat keel-cooled unit with it?
Updating or replacing the 10 year old refrigeration unit on our 1980 E38 is becoming more of an imperative after the...
Its time to renew the packing. My 74 E-27 has a A-4. It has the standard bronze nut and gland w/ lock nut. I've done this many times on other equipment. The kicker is the distance to the back of the tranny on the A4 is min. There does not appear to be a coupling. There is a piece of black...
I have on my e-25, an older 7.5 hp Merc with electric start and an alternator so that batteries charge when the motor runs. Access to my battery box is in the cabin, under the steps. My portable gas tank is located in the gas locker (in the cockpit starboard-side storage box) with the fuel...
As my cabin sole replacement project forges on, I have hit a stumbling block.
The E-30+ early models had an engine box in the companionway with removable stairs functioning as the access to the engine compartment. (In later years, as best I can determine from pictures on Yachtworld, a...
I'm an old sailor, but a new owner of a used & abused 1989 E32-200. We're committed to restoring this nice boat to it's previous beauty, so I'm gonna have lots of questions for this forum. My first is this.
The large E32 ice box has two air cylinders that relieve the weight of the top entry...
Hi All,
I have seen this question, "how do I re-pack my stuffing box" posed literally hundreds of times, on different forums, and still no-one had a good photo based article on how to change the flax packing in an old school stuffing box. Sunday afternoon it was ridiculously rainy, hahvin' a...
Does anyone know what size packing goes in the stuffing box? The Boat is a 1982 E-38. Also, the coupling is so badly rusted I can't identify any of the bolts. It's pretty bad! This is going to be a real bear to replace. Maybe I'll just do what I did to my first boat. Cut the shaft, and start...
Stuffing Box / Packing Nut Tools.
I have always struggled to tighten and repack my shaft packing using a pipe wrench and a pair of channel locks until a old Sea Dog showed me this old Plumbers tool. It works like a crescent wrench and has a wing nut you tighten to the size of your packing...
After much searching and little luck I decided to create my own engine instrument panel box. So here is how to create a custom engine instrument panel box with some 1/8 inch fiberglass sheet, fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. Oh and of course duck tape. Sorry I didn’t take photos of each step…...
Has anyone serviced an e27 stuffing box while in the water ....atomic 4 engine...please respond if you have done it and are familiar with the situation iam in....brutal access in the 27

I am heavily favoring the Furono 1832 VX2 chart plotter/radar set up likely with the 22 inch radome versus the 18 inch. i'm deliberately staying away from Raymarine because I despise their fixed cost repair approach.
With the mount that I purchased on Ernie on this list, I plan on having a...
Help anyone. I have noticed that when the engine (transmission)is engaged, the prop shaft spins. However so does the stuffing box compression nut, locknut and stuffing box body. This seems to have been happening all along these four years of ownership. The S- Box does leak. Please...
My 35 Mk II has the ice box in the starbord aft corner of the cabin next to the sink. It has quit draining and I cannot seem to find access to the drain hose. I have plunged and pressed a hose to the drain. I have poured vinegar in the drain and poked around with a straightened coat hanger...
Does anyone know a good source for coaming box trim rings? Either plastic or teak is fine. My coaming box was in pretty dire shape, so I removed the trim ring (silly me thinking this was an easily attainable part:dunce: ) and started working on the box. It had gotten brittle from the sun and...
Hello All,
I am currently under contract to purchase an '83 Ericson 38. Today the marine survey was done on the hard. There were typical old boat issues like old wiring that needs to be organized and secured better, small physical defects, review of previous repairs, etc. The one issue that...
We finally decided that we didn't want to hassle with batteries and charging for refrigeration in La Petite. In a 23' boat it just gets too complicated.
So, time to start thinking ahead to an ice box. There are how-to articles out there for everying else, so I assume there must be some for...
Our rudder stuffing box is leaking. Looking at a previous thread the problem is addressed for a 35-2. Is the 32's the same ? Can any 32 owners offer any advice. The stuffing box has the 4 bolts as described in the specs, but ours looks a little different than the drawing. Would like to also...
Does anyone off hand know the approximate cubic feet of an icebox for a 1972 Ericson 29, I am considering a putting in a cold-machine unit. The boat is over 100 mile drive...just trying to save the ride.:egrin:
Well, it looks like I have to repack the rudder stuffing box on my E35-3. I have the proper amount and size packing material. The question I have is: How is the stuffing box put together? My assumption is that when the upper plate it loosened and raised up, I will have to get some tool...
Question: I own a E-27, but a friend of mine is considering buying a E-25, and he said there doesn't appear to be a Ice Box. Is there, or is there not a Ice Box. Is there a logical location to put a portable one?
Jeff

With regards to the icebox on our E-27, I am not sure what is faster, the speed of sound or the rate ice melts in the Florida summer. Anyhow, after looking into it ( no pun) there are several areas void of any insulation and the rest have no room for any. So I was thinking that instead of trying...
I recently inherited a 1970 E 30. It's a tiller model with a wheel retrofitted. I am a novice and am trying to get the boat sailable. A mechanic told me the stuffing box is leaking, but that on this boat the engine must be pullled to work on it. He says the fuel tank prevents access. He also...
I recently bought an e-34t that is a project boat and so far the project is going well. But I wold like to know if any one has tried to drain the ice box into the thru-hull fitting for the cocpit drain. obviosly I am trying to get water out of the ice box rather than add to it. I am also trying...
The cockpit coaming box on my E35-3 has started to deteroriate. It looks like it was made of some sort of plastic and is securely glassed into the cockpit wall. Over the years, winch handles and other parts & pieces have managed to break out several chunks of plastic in the back of the box...
Greetings, All. I once read on an earlier Ericson list, that someone had replaced the flax packing on the always troublesome E32-2 rudder stuffing box with an o-ring. Does anyone have any information on dimensions, material, and where to get such an o-ring? I'm hauling out this year and would...
