Kubota Block to Marine Engine Saga

Well.......Now that I paid a diesel mechanic to give me a $6000+
estimate to rebuild my M4-30, I have a bunch of boxes of parts
I am looking at kubota tractor engine short blocks that I can bolt all the
marine parts to. The M4-30 4-cylinder uses the kubota Y-850 block.
From what I can dig up the M-25XP 3-cylinder is the kubota D-950 block.
My research leads me to believe that the more recent D-905 3-cylinder
block will accept my bell housing, front gear case and the REST.
Kubota short blocks are remanufactured regularly in Tractor Country.
Have found several rebuilders with short blocks IN STOCK :p
Just have to verify the bolt-up. Experience with this would be GREAT !
A gear-jammin friend of mine reminded me that my M4-30 is no longer a
marine engine.....just a box of TRACTOR PARTS :D

Also looking for the Parts Diagram or Service Manual pdf on the
Hurth HBW-50 Transmission so I can put that back together !

Thank you to all you old tractor riders :egrin: /) /)

Figured it Out !

Here's a cool little tip for your diesel repower.
Engine Power Source (www.enginepowersource.com) remanufactures
Kubota Diesel Engines and has several models in STOCK.
The Universal M3-20 uses the Kubota D-600 block.
The Universal M-25-XP Series uses the Kubota D-950 block... and so on.
These guys know what bell housings bolt to what engines.
Remove all the Marine Hardware, trade in your engine (worth $1000)
Bolt it all on to a NEW tractor engine for half the price of a new Marine one !

Happy Motoring :egrin: /) /)

I have been listening in the background to this Kubota stuff, sounds great to me. How can I find out which block goes to an M-40?

Kubota Number is on your motor...

Hey Ted,
The Kubota model number is generally located right by your injection pump on the left side (as you face it) of the motor. It should be stamped just under it.
Even without the repower, purchasing basic elements (say an injector, or whatever) from a Kubota dealer will save you a ton over purchasing "marine" parts.

History of the Universal Motor Co

Hi Ted....
The story according to www.atomicfourengineservice.ca
Get in to site and add /History_of_the_Universal_Motor_Company_4.html
This tells the History of most of our Universal Diesel Marine Engines.
The M-40 is the Kubota V-1502 block.
The TRICK is to find a popular TRACTOR ENGINE currently in use that
is remanufactured regularly for industrial service.
Go through the www.enginepowersource.com site and check it out !
They will be able to tell you from your old block # if the bell housing
is compatable on available engines. They have many types in stock
listed in the site.
My problem is that my M4-30 is a RARE 4-cylinder block that is not
used currently. If my engine was the M3-20 3-cylinder, I can use
D-600 block still in use today! They want core for core exchange
and only deal in long blocks. The thing you need to keep is the
marine exhaust manifold.
The site www.westerbeke.com has a complete section on old models
and engine manufacture date history in "Products"
Example: Universal M25-XP=Kubota D-950@ $3300 from EPS
All your Marine Equipment(bell housing/exhaust manifold/alternator/
raw water pump/etc)bolts to this block :D

Good Luck :egrin: /) /)

For pricing budgets the V-1502 is close enough.
For purchase I would recommend engine inspection.
The Model number is STAMPED on the side of the block,
just below the injector pump.
The M-40 used the V-1502 block from 1982-1997
The M40B used the V-1505 block from 1999-?

M4-30 Kubota engine

I to have a M4-30 Kubota engine block Y-850 and am running into dead ends searching for new injectors. I have four Nissan Denso 3340 7J injectors. Did you have any luck finding new injectors?

Oil pan M25XP from Kubota?

As I am in the process of refurbishing my M25XP, I have looked at replacing the oil pan and drain system. Turns out, as some of you probably already know, the D950 typically has the dipstick into the block on (our) left side with a pan (can provide number, but my eyes teared up when I saw the $60 price tag) that does NOT have the dipstick hole etc. on (our) right.

We have no room on port (alternator, starter, wiring, etc.). Does anybody know the Kubota part that has the hole/fitting on the right? I spoke with Messicks and have an inquiry into Kubota. Nothing so far. Maybe one could just drill out the hole and attach the dip tube? Thoughts?

[Beginning of rant] Why in the world are they marking it up to levels that can only be considered immoral? :0 [End of rant] Would be so much easier if we could all just get along...

FYI, I am discovering a whole set of nice drain systems that will look sweet!

Thanks!

Drain Kit

Before I switch to becoming a Catalina owner ;) here is one more question:

Has anyone replaced their oil drain kit? The fitting we have on the M25XP seems to be a 22x1.5 mm adapter with a 12x1.25 mm banjo fitting (?). My new pan (yes!) is rumored to have a 12x1.25 mm plug (per Kubota D950). I am finding kits that are 'close' but nothing that fits (so far).

Has anyone changed their oil drain kit and has a recommendation? Can't be too long either...

Thanks!

You are a great resource, Jackson, and you very well know we would all be lost without you!

And furthermore, he's an honorary Viking!
:egrin:

Seriously, our '88 came with the factory option of the banjo fitting and remote oil change hose. I have no idea what the real parts specs are, tho. I did take it all off some years ago and sourced some new crush washers for it and a new hose.

Best,
Loren

Other options

Thanks, Loren.

Turns out the bottom of my pan is very rusted, including the drain kit. As I have the engine out, I am replacing the pan (standard D950 Kubota pan and we'll weld on the dipstick fitting on stbd). There are nice drain kits out there, including from Jabsco, Sierra, etc., but I was wondering what folks had used. It seems that the 'standard' Kubota drain is M12x1.25 mm but on 'our' pan we have an M22 hole with the adapter. I still have not been able to track down 'our' pan, and I have now given up.

One appealing option, per Catalina discussion (and elsewhere), is to move the drain aft to the lower part of the pan. There is less clearance, of course, but this is the opportunity to do this.

Will keep the gang posted.
