Hi all!
First-time post here on this fantastic forum.
Last summer I purchased a 1973 E29 and am slowly chipping away on restoring her. One of the many projects on my list is to replace my wheel with the tiller that came with the boat. The PO converted it to a wheel and thankfully left the...
We purchased an E27 in Portland, Oregon about three months ago.
We're doing a complete refit...until we run out of money...
I was wondering what the numbers stamped on the tiller base plate were?
The numbers are 27-117
Is the 117 a hull production number?
If so, what is the the 27?
FYI The...
Both the rudder post extension and the crossbar are 40" long 1/8th" wall aluminum tubes.
The post extension has an outside diameter of 2 and 3/8ths. The crossbar ("tiller") diameter is 1 and 1/2".
The slot in the post tube is 6" long, declining in width from 3/4" to 1/2".
This rig makes a...
Question for other owners of the E26 with tillers.
I bought a 1988 this fall and have been doing a number of projects getting it ready for the spring. I wanted to put a tiller extension on. Although the previous owner didn't have an extension mounted, the port seatback does have a tiller lock...
We have a complete boat with the YS Wheel Option, with the exception of the Emergency Tiller. Anyone know where one can be purchased? Or does anyone have the specifications such that I could have one made?
Thanks!

I just got back from a delivery on a lovely Jason 35, and the ancient AutoHelm 2000 tiller pilot drive motor failed about half way down the Washington coast. With three of us to take alternating one hour helm watches it worked out OK. On the plus side we had the full moon, Venus, and a host of...
Hello,
I have an 1973 Ericson 27 and there is 'considerable' play in the tiller. It's coming from where the metal bracket that forms the end of the tiller attaches to the big bronze top of the rudder post (ie the bolt 'hinge' that allows the tiller to move up and down). The bearings associated...
Hello Folks, I am the proud new owner of an E27, (berthed in Dana Point CA)
I am wondering if anyone has an opinion as to an appropriate tiller pilot for her for occaisional single hand use. the raymarine 1000 says it is good for boats displacing 6500 lbs. This boat lists displacement at...
Does anyone know if the E27 and E29 use the same Tillers?
I need to replace my Tiller and contacted H&L Marine. They have a stock tiller (#1157F) for the E27. With my boat being a '71 and passing through multiple owners, I cannot be sure my Tiller is stock or if it matches the E27...
One of the reasons I'm so sorry I only acquired my first sailboat after retiring is that I've learned that EVERY TINY DETAIL on a boat has a whole school of thought and experience behind it and that one ignores it at ones peril. The details just keep on coming and I'm enjoying every minute of...
Is this a good idea?
http://www.savvyboater.com/p-74-helmsmate-outboard-tiller-extension-handles.aspx
I'm thinking of the one with the U-joint, which can steer with a push-pull motion while also twisting the throttle. Then I can sit on the seat, which is further forward, and not nose up in...
WE just purchased an 87 32 and it has no emergency tiller. Does anyone 1) have one for sale; 2) know where to get one; 3) know if any parts lefty from Pacific Seacraft that I might get one through. Thanks
I need to replace my (broken) tiller, which is 52" long. In speaking with Carol at H & L she shows the proper tiller is 46 3/4" long, # 1157, with a 5" rise. Does anyone know what the original was or have any suggestions as to which tiller(s) may be correct, understanding that a tiller is a...
I have been thinking for some time now that the 30+ was better designed as a tiller boat, only to find out recently that the wheel was an option and it was indeed tiller driven in it's standard configuration.
My pedestal has seen better days and I would rather convert than replace or have parts...
Hello,
Well for my first project I want to remove the Tiller / Rudder and repaint it. This will be a test run (for doing the entire bottom this spring) and first time using bottom paint for me.
I do not know what type of paint is on the bottom currently. (Hey Sven what type of paint is...
Hi- I am going to be switching my E27 back to tiller steering. The PO put in a wheel in front of the tiller which makes it difficult to move around the cockpit. Unfortunately the tiller fork/bracket and tiller did not come with the boat. Based on some other posts here, I'm guessing the tiller...
Has anyone installed a Raymarine Tillerpilot in their E-25. I figured I would ask and see if anyone has had any experience with this install. My E25 restoration is going great, and I can't wait to get out sailing!
Since it looks like Capain Rob's dream boat deal fell apart, does anyone have a need for an original wood rudder and tiller for a 23-2? I would like to get $200.
There is a lot of slop in the tiller on my E27. The entire range of motion appears to be due to either a lot of wear, or a bad fit, between the casting that bolts to the tiller, and the one that bolts to the head of the rudder.
I have shimmed it, and messed around with it, but in the end it...
I am looking to buy a 1983 Ericson 28+ which has a very strong pull on the tiller when motoring near top end. Is this a common problem? What can be done to lessen it? The boat has a slight list to starboard at the dock, is that a related problem or the result of full tanks on one side and not...
Hello all,
The tiller on my E27 is falling apart (the layers are separating.) I was wondering if someone could recommend a replacement. I would attempt to repair the original but I live in the city and do not have a place to work on it. The GF probably wont like the epoxy fumes in our 700...
I'm on my way to H&R Woodworking to see if they can replace my tiller, which I kinda fell on coming back from Catalina on Sunday... anybody know if the E28 tiller is the same size as a, J24, Catalina 32, etc. Might make the sorting through the different tillers easier...
Recently purchased a 1969 Ericson 23 with a thru-hull rudder assembly. The tiller mount fits into the thru-hull fitting and has, incorporated into one piece of metal, two "pin mounts" (small holes for a bolt to slide through) for the tiller. One of these has been broken off (as can be seen in...

I’ve decided not to complete my E27 restoration project due to costs overrun & the fact that I have received a wonderful perfect condition Morgan 35... I have everything for sale, mainly I have ready for shipment is my main sail, the jib sail, and the tiller. The sails are in pretty good...
My newly acquired 1970 Ericson 26 has an inboard tiller. There's a small amount of play, which I can live with. However, the tiller is offcenter to starboard about five degrees! Does anyone know how this can be adjusted? There are three set screws in the shaft head, a collar the same diameter as...
Tiller Pilot, Has anyone installed one on a E-27? Any recommendations as to what brand and model is sufficient to the 7,000 lb displacement of the E-27?
Been looking high and low for a copy of an owners manual for 1978 e30 tiller model didnt dee it in the specs and docs any body have any other resources?
I recently purchased a 1973 E29 with a tiller and plan on doing some longer distance cruising and like the ease of wheel steering. I have thought about converting the tiller to a pedestal/wheel. What year/hull# did they start building the 29 with a wheel? Has anyone gone through converting...
Hey Fellow Sailors & Friends,
Check this out. Rather than spending over a $100. bucks for a Forspar tiller extension and lock, I came up with this solution for about $15. bucks. There was already a bronze oar lock mounted on the side of the cockpit when I purchased my 1973 Ericson 27. I...
I picked up an E27 last fall - Love the Boat! However, the tiller fork is broken. The past owner bolted stainless straps on each side for support. It functions, but doesn't look all that great.
Does anyone know who I can contact. Or if anyone has completed a wheel conversion, I'll be glad...
I posted this question in the alt.sailing forum as well, but I suspect that I'm more likely to get useful answers here, among other E23 owners.
We just took our brand new, old Ericson 23 out for a shakedown cruise ... very satisfying and promising.
The only part that threw me (apart from...
Where can I locate a manual or emergency tiller, i have nothing in case the wheel steering goes out? Please help. Oh and who does anyone suggest for a new mainsail, especially in the ventura area? Reasonable.;)
I'm looking at buying a 1987 E-26 and wondered if the original tiller is quite so long as the one on this boat - it basically takes up the entire cockpit, nearly up to the cabin, if I remember correctly.
Alternatively, does anyone have experience with using a shorter tiller?
Thanks for...
Can anyone recommend a good tiller minder for my 1973 E-27? I am still fighting the tiller on long windless crossings under power to the Channel Islands. Makes it hard to enjoy the crossing. I'm not looking for a auto pilot, just something to secure the rudder as on wheel steering models. I...
The casting on top of the rudder post, where the tiller attaches, of my Ericson 26 has cracked and needs replacing. Does anyone know of a source for this part?
Also it seems like a good time to replace the tiller, has anyone used one from West Marine?
Thanks
Robert Mann

I have a noticable amount of movement in the tiller at the point of attachment. I have 1967 E26. I disassymbled the brass attachment and could really find nothing that looked unusual, but then again I've never taken one apart before so I really don't know what is right or wrong. All I know is...
I need to replace the replacement tiller on my Ericson 27. I am looking for the original design specs for the tiller so that I can have one made. The tiller that is currently on the boat is an O-Day 27 tiller and it is obviously wrong. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Everyone - I've got the bug to get an autotiller. I've got an E29, Hull 190. I sail primarily the SF Bay, out of Alameda. For those outside the west coast, the bay is pretty heavy winds in the season, a lot 25+ knot days, good chop, heavy currents. I don't think anyone will be surprised...
Well, old age finally caught up to my 27. My tiller fork broke. The tiller fork is that H shaped piece of cast brass that connects the wooden tiller handle to the tiller head coming up out of the deck.
I had it re-brazed, but I don't have the confidence in it that I would have in a new one...
Hi, I have an E-35(ll) with only a tiller.
I want to make an Emergency Tiller. I have considered several variations of bending 2.5 - 3" pipe that would bolt to where the existing tiller connects to the rudder post "cap".
I would appreciate any input.
Thanks!
